About Dr. Chris Kennel

Dr. Kennel is a fellowship-trained otolaryngologist who moved from the US to Hawke's Bay in 2022 with his family — drawn by the lifestyle, the community, and the opportunity to provide comprehensive ENT care in a region that needs it.

Originally from Colorado, he completed his medical training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and otolaryngology residency at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, followed by an advanced fellowship in complex ear surgery, neurotology, and stereotactic radiosurgery in Delaware, and a fellowship with the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy.

He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology, a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), and holds vocational registration as a specialist with the Medical Council of New Zealand. He also teaches ENT registrars through the public hospital system.

Having navigated significant health challenges within his own family, he knows first-hand how important it is to be able to reach your surgeon directly — and gives his mobile number to all surgical patients for that reason.

FAQ

Before your visit

Do I need a referral?

No formal referral is required — self-referrals and GP referrals are both welcome.

A good referral includes information about your symptoms, any prior investigations, treatments tried, and relevant health history. This helps us assess urgency and ensure you're seen by the right specialist.

If you're self-referring, please include a detailed description of your symptoms, any relevant prior treatments, and test results when you contact us — this helps us make the most of your consultation time.

What do I need before my first consultation?

Arrive 10 minutes early, bring ID, insurance details, and any existing reports, medication lists, or previous treatment notes. Appointments are typically 30 minutes (complex: 40+ minutes). Payment is required on the day; we can submit Southern Cross claims. Family members, whānau, or support persons are welcome to attend.

How long does it take to get an appointment?

Urgent suspected cancer referrals are usually seen within 7 days. Most other patients are seen within 6–8 weeks, often sooner. We do our best to accommodate urgent non-cancer cases promptly — if your GP considers your situation urgent, ask them to note that in the referral and we will prioritise accordingly.

What if I need to reschedule?

We understand that life sometimes gets in the way. Please call us as soon as possible — phone is the best way to reschedule so we can offer your slot to another patient. Call 06 651 4070 during business hours. Please give at least two business days notice. Each appointment reserves staff, clinic space, and resources, so cancellations with less than two business days notice, and no-shows, incur a $150 fee.

When are you open?

Clinic hours are Monday–Friday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. Consultations are usually Tuesdays and Wednesdays; surgery Wednesdays, Thursdays and some Fridays at Kaweka Hospital.

Where do I park?

Kaweka Specialist Centre has an attached car park with dedicated patient spaces. The entry barrier opens automatically. We'll text you the exit code approximately 90 minutes before your appointment, and it's also available at reception during your visit.

Costs & insurance

How much will it cost?

Seeing a specialist is a significant cost without insurance. We try to offer good value by treating multiple problems in a single visit, performing minor procedures in clinic rather than the operating theatre (avoiding hospital and anaesthetist fees), and managing simple follow-ups by phone, email, or text at no charge.

  • Initial consultation: $325 (child) / $397 (adult)
  • Follow-up: $219 (child) / $289 (adult)
  • Complex consultation: $629 (initial) / $475 (follow-up)
  • Simple procedures (endoscopy, complex ear cleaning, biopsy, nasal cautery, nerve blocks): $150–$297
  • Advanced procedures (grommets, ultrasound-guided biopsy, complex cautery): $435–$655
  • Skin lesion removal: quoted separately depending on complexity
  • Botox: $650 (100-unit vial)
  • Prescription authorisation (no clinic visit, established patients only): $30

These are indicative private fees and may change over time. ACC-covered appointments are free to patients. Southern Cross members have their own negotiated fees depending on their plan — we submit claims on your behalf. We provide a fee estimate before your appointment if requested. If your insurer requires prior authorisation, we can provide the necessary estimates.

Post-operative consultations within 6 weeks of surgery are included at no charge. Endoscopy performed during a post-operative visit is charged separately.

Do you accept ACC?

Yes, ACC is accepted and there is no additional ACC surcharge. ACC hearing loss evaluations are not performed through this clinic.

Can I be put on the public surgery list?

Yes, this is a common request for patients without private insurance. Surgery costs can be significant — hospital fees are often several times the surgeon's fee — making self-funding difficult. The public system offers the same surgical options, though cases are triaged by medical necessity. Urgent cases such as cancer are usually treated within weeks. Less urgent cases may wait months to over a year, and the public system may decline non-urgent elective cases if capacity is limited.

What are the payment terms?

Payment is required on the day of service. We accept EFTPOS, credit card, or bank transfer. Direct deposit within 14 days to 38-9025-0478706-00 (ENT & Allergy Limited). $50 late fee after 30 days; disputes within 7 days.

Surgery

Are there age or medical limits for private surgery?

Private surgeries are performed at Kaweka Hospital. The following guidelines apply:

  • Straightforward: ages 3–80 and relatively healthy
  • Requires assessment: ages 18 months–3 years; ages 3–80 with moderate medical conditions or higher anaesthetic risk; over 80 and relatively healthy with good social support
  • Not suitable for private surgery: under 18 months; significant medical conditions or high anaesthetic risk; patients without adequate social support

Patients not suitable for private surgery can be referred to the public surgical waiting list at Hastings Hospital.

How long until surgery?

Urgent surgery (e.g., cancer) usually 1-2 weeks. Routine cases vary by waiting list, and we are happy to schedule surgeries for patients when it is convenient for them. We also maintain short-notice lists for constrained availability.

What are your surgical outcomes and complications?

Dr. Kennel audits his outcomes annually to ensure he is providing high quality care and to identify areas for improvement. Publishing this data allows patients to make informed decisions. Because patients have direct mobile access to him after surgery, he is personally aware of ED visits, readmissions, and post-operative issues that would often go unreported to the operating surgeon — so this data reflects a more complete picture than most published figures. Like all surgical data, context matters: surgeons who take on more complex cases may have higher complication rates simply because the cases are harder.

  • Traditional tonsillectomy return to operating theatre: 1.94%
  • Traditional tonsillectomy readmission for pain or dehydration: 5.8%
  • Coblation tonsillectomy post-operative bleed: 0%
  • Coblation tonsillectomy readmission for pain or dehydration: 0%
  • Mastoidectomy facial nerve injury: 0%
  • Parotidectomy permanent facial nerve injury: 0% (temporary weakness following complex cancer surgery near the nerve has resolved in all cases)
  • Parotidectomy sialocele (fluid collection): 20%
  • Head & neck cancer clear surgical margins: 92.9%
  • Melanoma clear surgical margins: 100%
  • Neck dissection lymph node yield: average 48, median 50
  • Neck dissection major complications: 0%
  • Skin cancer wound infection: 5.8%
  • Non-skin surgical site infection: 1.6%
  • 30-day postoperative mortality: 0%

Cholesteatoma recurrence can take 2–4 years to become apparent after surgery, so true long-term rates require extended follow-up. Dr. Kennel uses careful technique and Mesna irrigation to minimise recurrence risk, and planned MRI surveillance and second-look procedures are used where indicated. So far, his cholesteatoma recurrence rate is 7.5%

Do you offer cosmetic procedures?

We focus on therapeutic procedures (e.g., Botox for facial pain, reconstructive skin cancer work). We do not offer cosmetic-only facelifts or rhinoplasty.

About the practice

Are there conditions you don't treat?

We treat the full range of ENT conditions, but some things are better handled elsewhere:

  • Dizziness and balance disorders — referred to a specialist colleague
  • TMJ jaw pain — better managed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or dentist
  • Hearing aids — fitted by an audiologist; we can investigate the underlying cause but don't supply aids
  • Cochlear implants — performed at tertiary centres; we can advise and coordinate a referral
  • Vestibular schwannoma surgery — we follow and advise patients with these tumours but surgery or radiation is performed at a tertiary centre
  • Adult sleep apnoea surgery — surgical options are available and can be performed for self-paying patients, but most insurers don't cover this; check your policy before booking. Tonsillectomy for sleep-disordered breathing in children is a separate matter and is routinely covered.
  • Major head and neck cancer reconstruction — we work up and coordinate complex cancers but some major reconstructive surgery requires a tertiary centre
  • Cosmetic procedures — we focus on therapeutic outcomes; we don't offer cosmetic rhinoplasty or facelifts

We also don't treat: complex nasal trauma requiring rib grafting, some professional voice dysphonia, paediatric airway, cleft lip/palate, or parathyroid surgery.

Do you sell medical equipment?

Yes — we supply surgical microscopes and ENT equipment to clinicians, with low markup and transparent pricing. Contact Dr. Kennel with any inquiries.

Are you part of a wider group?

ENT & Allergy is an independent practice. Dr. Kennel shares facilities and an admin team with other ENT specialists at the Kaweka Specialist Centre, but each practice operates independently with separate bookings and billing. Clinic signage refers to the shared space as ENT Head & Neck Hawke's Bay — if you're coming to see Dr. Kennel, follow signs for that or for his name.

Do you see patients from outside Hawke's Bay?

Yes — patients from anywhere in New Zealand are welcome. Dr. Kennel regularly sees patients from Gisborne and Tairāwhiti, where there is currently no local ENT surgeon. Hastings is approximately 3 hours from Gisborne by road. GP referrals from outside the region are welcome.
